Healthcare

Adequate and appropriate exposure to light is critical for the health of patients in healthcare settings. Upgrading the lighting conditions in patient rooms and other areas can significantly improve the psychological and physiological well-being of patients and staff alike.

Health benefits

Light—both natural and artificial—impacts many health outcomes among patients and staff in hospitals such as recovery time, sleep, circadian rest-activity rhythms, as well as length of stay in the hospital. There is strong evidence that artificial light in the range of 2,500 lux to 10,000 lux contributes to a reduction in dementia and depression, as well as easing pain and reducing agitation.
